I have a real soft spot for games like Everybody's Golf that takes the idea of a sport sim that can be ruthlessly hard, making it a combination of fun, accessible, and challenging. Now with Everybody's Golf VR bringing the experience to PSVR I was excited to check it out, and I was not disappointed.
Everybody's Golf VR kicks off dropping you into the practice range to show you the fine art of choosing a club, switching between practice or actual shots, and how the ball will react when you hit it. This is where I spent my first hours of the game. Not because it was hard, but because I got hooked trying to chip balls into the baskets.
Then you are unleashed on the game and it's three courses. Initially you only have access to the three random holes option for the first course. As you progress it unlocks the ability to do nine or 18 holes which is perfect for time management as you can fit a game in for however long you can be isolated in a VR headset.
The first course is a generic golf course, the second one is a beach course with all of the frustrating cliffs with the out of bounds that Everybody's Golf fans will recognize, and the third course is in a dinosaur park with all the fixings like mud pits or lava. You read that last bit right. I didn't know how much I wanted to play an 18-hole round of golf with a roaring T-Rex watching me as little dinosaurs run around in front of you until I was playing it.
The game comes with a lot of unlockables, like new caddies to annoyingly repeat the same phrases as you play, to classics of the series like tornado cups to the golf clubs that ease of the spin. These variants and the number of holes you can play add enough variety, despite it only having three courses. I have had more than enough entertainment for the price tag, and I plan to spend much more time in that VR space trying to get from a slightly worse than par player, to a par player.
The detailed world around each of the courses are beautifully built with the dinosaurs, planes, birds, waterfalls, and so much more. So much love and care has been put into making sure this game is as much a VR onslaught to the senses, as it is a classic Everybody’s Gold experience. My only real critique is that the caddies get annoying fast. They make generic comments like nice shot followed by a sad comment that it is in the bunker. It felt too robotic, generic, and oh so repetitive, I wound up guessing what they would say before they said it, usually getting it right. This is a tiny nit-pick about a great game though, it stings more hearing those comments when you keep screwing up an easy putt.
If you are looking for the diversity of modes that Everybody's Golf usually has, this won’t be the game for you. If you are looking for a fun VR Golf game that is dripping with Everybody's Golf's signature charm oozing from every hole on the course, then you won't be disappointed with the package you have to offer.
