Bungie has left Activision and taken Destiny with it

Posted By Drunk_Monk

Kotaku has reported that Bungie has splits with Activision, keeping the Destiny IP.

This is interesting news as Destiny continues to be a loved game from a story and game-play aspect, but most people have been angry since the first games launch with money making policies.

The future should be interesting as these policies are usually publisher determined.  Will Bungie go down a game friendly route, or see the value in the golden goose themselves... only time will tell.

Well this is going to be interesting to watch as it will be interesting to see what Bungie does with Destiny now and shows if the recent monetization actions have been a Activision pushed thing or not.

Still I think this is a sign that Activision as well as hopefully others are starting to feel the backlash to pleasing Shareholders over gamers. The Shareholders only care about profits and Activision has tried to help support this by including more microtransactions on things, chasing trends, pushing the Mobile stuff etc but the gaming community has slowly started to respond to that which resulted in Call of Duty, Destiny and Blizzard as whole doing worse and worse each year with the recent yearly finance report that went out for Activision being pretty damning.

Now we are seeing the effects of this with Activision deciding Destiny and Bungie aren't worth hanging onto, Blizzard going through some major staff changes and the E-sports scene for Heroes of the Storm being abandoned with Hearthstone starting to look similar due to a recent survey gone out and COD microtransactions just getting the point of ridiculousness.

Think we may start to see more things like start to happen with other partners and publishers as time goes on but for now it's a wait and see but I do feel this is  good sign at the very least just don't stuff it up Bungie.

Bungie is now the publisher, won't they just want the money now?

That's the question.

People liked to blame Activision for the stuff they didn't like. How long untill Bungie does it for the cash flow is what I'll be interested to see.

Well they can't make money if no one's playing or buying their game to start with though.

Apart from the microtransactions I wonder how much, if any, of their poor design choices from D1 to D2 were caused or assisted by Activision though?

They'll only make money if they can get back on track, and this will be interesting to see how and what they change to make this happen. Or the IP will die, and therefore no money,  layoffs will happen etc.

Activision I think just sees the writing on the wall and happily got out of there instead of investing more.

Can Bungie right the ship? Not to be pessimistic but I don't think they can, I think the problem is more a Bungie problem than an Activision one, because everyone seems to be putting full blame for the state of Destiny on Activision.

I really look forward to seeing how they  change D2 more than the forsaken improvements. And D3 also. D3 wont sell well though, without a mega good marketing pitch on what they have done without Activision.

Yup it's confirmed Destiny 3 will a mobile game, fully exclusive. lol

WOuldn't be surprised if they make a new IP for mobile along side D3, or they may make D3 fit more around a companion app that you pay for , or is heavily ad supported.

It would be great if they went the way of BFV with no premium pass for D3. If EA/Dice can figure out how devisive of player base these are then hopefully Bungie can come to the same conclusion. I wonder how much revenue the micro transactions in D2 for emotes etc has generated and whether they will build on that model (eg fortnite) instead.

Honestly I would prefer Battle Passes/ Expansion Packs, to lootbox style options, even if it is Cosmetic only. I would like the Cosmetics in the game to unlock by doing specific things, but not hidden behind Loot boxes, or money.

Both valid points above, and I like the idea of both. I think it might be a combo of both - paid expansions/season passes, and paid cosmetic microtrans (but no lootboxes). I just cant see how they'll fund the games as service model otherwise.

Who knows, Its Bungie, they love making decisions the players don't want.

Nah its been awhile since I played and I forgot they already rotate cosmetic stuff you can buy straight with Silver. I think it'll all stay the same more than likely. The RNG engrams you get from levelling up.
